Join us for a whaley-good afternoon learning about whales!
Come and learn how to identify whales to the species level and how individual whales are identified.
Fleurieu Marine Education is partnering with the Encounter Bay Right Whale Study group, for this special workshop for 8-14 year old children.
One of the best things about Victor Harbor is that Southern Right Whales visit the waters of Encounter Bay every year to give birth and nurse their young. The Encounter Bay Right Whale Study Group (EBRWS) have been documenting the whales that visit Encounter Bay since 2009.
Through perseverance, and countless hours watching these animals, EBRWS has identified numerous individuals and documented their visits (and births) over time. EBRWS also contribute to the Australian Right Whale Photo Identification Catalogue to understand population demographics and links between health, foraging ecology and Southern Ocean climatic variability. Their efforts are key to helping the Southern Right Whale recover from historical whaling that decimated their population, leading them to being listed as Endangered under the EPBC Act.
