Moreton Bay Research Station Open Day

  • - (AEST)
  • Moreton Bay Research Station
37 Fraser Street, Dunwich QLD 4183, Australia

This National Science Week, we are opening the doors of the Moreton Bay Research Station (MBRS). Join us for a day of celebration, knowledge-sharing and community engagement.

Discover the critical importance of biodiversity conservation through the theme of the day: "Species Survival in Moreton Bay". The species here are increasingly under threat from changing climates, increased temperatures, degradation of water quality, nutrient run-off and vehicle strikes.

Explore interactive exhibits, guided tours and hands-on activities led by scientists and researchers. Grow your appreciation for the delicate balance of marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Celebrate the profound connection that the Quandamooka people on Stradbroke Island have with land and sea.

About the Moreton Bay Research Station

The Traditional Custodians of Minjerribah have an extensive heritage in education. They have been transmitting their wisdom and reverence for this important region across countless generations. The intricate interconnected systems on Minjerribah present a range of challenges that inspire students to engage in scientific and historical investigation.

In 1962, the University of Queensland (UQ) assumed management of the Dunwich Laboratory facility on Minjerribah. Since then, UQ's Moreton Bay Research Station (MBRS) has welcomed tens of thousands of students and scientists. Each visit is an exploration of the intricacies of Moreton Bay's marine and terrestrial environment.

This Open Day during National Science Week 2024 is an opportunity to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of research and teaching at the MBRS. This collaborative event, undertaken by the MBRS in partnership with the Centre for Biodiversity and Conservation Science (CBCS), promises to be a beacon of celebration, knowledge-sharing, and community engagement.
