Get hands-on with plant pathology!

This National Science Week, join Forest Doctors for a one-day youth and citizen scientist workshop. In this workshop, you'll learn all about forest plants which have diseases.

You'll be introduced to the history of plant pathology, with a particular focus on pathogenic fungi of trees. We'll then embark on a specimen collection activity, where you'll hunt for plant material based on the signs and symptoms of disease. You'll then have the opportunity to isolate a pathogenic fungi from a living sample, and observe its features under a microscope.

No prior knowledge of plant pathology or microscopy is needed. All training will be provided on the day!

You will need a drink bottle, sun protection, sturdy footwear and long-sleeved clothing. The specimen collection will take place outdoors in a nearby national park.

Light refreshments and snacks will be provided throughout the day.

This event invites all ages, backgrounds and abilities*. Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bookings are essential (for catering purposes).

*Participants with special needs should contact the organisers in advance to plan for optimal accessibility of the activities.

This event has been sponsored by the British Society for Plant Pathology in order to communicate and disseminate knowledge about plant pathology to the community.
