Expression of interest – National Science Week at the Ekka

EKKA Expression of InterestLiddell Education (Street Science), with the support of the Federal Government’s Inspiring Australia programme, will be running a National Science Week event from 5 – 14 August during the EKKA. We are calling for expressions of interest to be involved in this event by running an interactive, hands-on exhibit for one-day duration within the EKKA’s Agricultural Pavilion.

We are looking for a collaborative approach between a number of organisations, which will allow scientists and educators to showcase their current and ongoing science projects. This is the third consecutive year that Inspiring Australia has supported this event and it is recognised nationally as a key opportunity to engage the public in meaningful science activities.

Conditions

Successful applicants will be provided with a space (approx. 3m x 3m) in an indoor pavilion at the 2016 Royal Brisbane Show to setup an engaging display which will provide hands-on activities for the Queensland public. This space will be provided free of charge with the ability to appropriately promote your organisation within the designated space.

In return, you must provide adequate staff for one full day, (see hours below) as well as all equipment, materials, and consumables required to run your chosen activities. Basic tables/access to power etc will be provided.

The space provided must be setup appropriately to draw in the passing crowd and provide them with access to high quality, engaging activities which can demonstrate the relevance of science (in particular Technology and Agriculture will be a focus this year) to everyday life.

The activities must be provided FREE OF CHARGE to visitors in the National Science Week space, which will be managed and overseen by Street Science.

This project is particularly looking for applicants from organisations who can provide one or more of the following:

  • Present information about current research being performed in Queensland laboratories.
  • Provide fun hands-on experiments that kids and families can participate in.
  • Display a series of interactive displays that will engage people of all ages.
  • Provide access to real scientists and educators who can advise opportunities for further engagement in the sciences.

The interactive space MUST be open and manned between the mandatory hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm. As the indoor pavilion may open from 9:00 am till 7:00 pm daily, the applicant can choose to man the space until the pavilion closes or provide static displays for visitors to observe after 4pm.

Bump in MUST be completed by 8:00 am and bump out needs to be completed efficiently with minimal disruption to the exhibit on the evening of the chosen day.

A limited quota of free entry passes to the EKKA will be provided for staff involved on the day. The exact number of tickets provided will need to be negotiated with the organiser.

To express your interest in being involved in this collaborative National Science Week event, please complete the application form (PDF, 123 kB) and email a copy through to Kim Liddell from Street Science. We look forward to helping you inspire scientists of the future and show the EKKA crowd what a wonderful science community we have here in Queensland.
