St Clare’s STEM Extravaganza

  • - (AEST)
  • St Clare's School
13 Mars Street, Tully QLD 4854, Australia

On Friday 16th August (Week 6), we are holding our annual STEM Extravaganza here at school to celebrate National Science Week. This whole school event from 9am-1.40pm, is designed to foster student's scientific curiosity and critical thinking about this year's theme -Species Survival: More than sustainability".

Students are invited to come dressed in line with the theme or as a scientist, technologist, mathematician or engineer.

Students will work in mixed aged groups, rotating through a series of engaging, hands-on, thought-provoking activities. Special guests from local organisations will lead activities focused on threatened species and conservation efforts, including our local cassowaries, as well as pest species, such as electric ants. Students will learn to identify macroinvertebrates, an indicator of water quality, with our science partners from Terrain NRM, James Cook University, and representatives from the Mamu Aboriginal Corporation. Students will explore the connections between food, bugs, birds and use, and learn about the conservation crisis. Students will also explore how drones are being used to map reef habitats, count koalas and more, and have the opportunity to get up close with some endangered animals through the use of virtual reality technology.
