The Broome Bird Observatory is on the northern shore of Roebuck Bay, about 25 km east of the township. The site is ideal for watching and recording the comings and goings of hundreds of thousands of migratory birds. The region is home to over 300 species of birds at different times of the year.
In addition to signposted walks and interpretive signs the Observatory has a research library and video room.
Guided tours of the shore, mangroves, plains and lakes are available (tour fees apply and bookings are recommended).
There are camping sites and cabin and chalet accommodation at the Observatory.
The road to the Observatory is accessible for two wheel drive vehicles when dry but it can be badly corrugated. Admission to the Observatory is free for day visitors, though a $5.00 donation is requested.
