Biodiversity Fest

  • - (AEST)
  • Trentham District Primary School
    Bridge Street, Trentham VIC 3458, Australia

The Trentham District Primary School “Biodiversity-fest” will involve our citizen scientists (Year 6 students) transferring their knowledge to younger students within the school, with the aim to increase environmental literacy throughout the school and to showcase that Science is fun! Students will carry out experiments with adherence to fair testing, repetition, measuring, maths calculations and accurate recordings. Our results will be uploaded to the NCCMA’s Healthy Coliban Catchment project as citizen scientists. Our Biodiversity-fest will engage our students, parents and community and enable our student leaders to participate in sharing knowledge through ‘kids teaching kids’. Our student leaders will work collaboratively to create a rotation of activities involving scientific experimentation related to the concepts of biodiversity including:

  • Comparing water quality at Trent Creek, our school piped water, and tank water supplies;
  • Investigating soil health in our veggie garden beds and compost;
  • Sketching and photographing the botanical plants and insects around Trent Creek and school;
  • Observing and sketching macro invertebrates from Trent Creek and mini-beasts from the school veggie beds;
  • Counting and recording the population sizes of macro invertebrates and determining how this can demonstrate water health;
  • Creating crafts to mimic the flight of various seeds and insects.
