Culburra Wind-Powered Car Showcase

  • - (AEST)
  • Culburra Public School
Carlton Crescent, Culburra Beach NSW 2540, Australia

Students at Culburra Public School have been investigating renewable energy and the design thinking process by designing a wind-powered car using recycled materials and LEGO. Their original brief was to build a lightweight car that travels on wheels at least three metres using only the power of wind. Class groups have recorded the results of various tests in class, exploring the relationship between car weight and distance, sail design, wind speed, force and friction. They have then used this new knowledge to design a wind-powered car that represents their class findings. At today's event, classes will showcase their 'class car' design and test it under wind to see which design travels the furthest. Students from each class will present a brief summary of their learning and record the weight and distance of their design in front of their peers, school and community. While not strictly a competition, the 'winning' class will be the group with the car that travels the furthest without falling over. In the name of STEM, may the best design win.
