Measuring Personal Exposure to UV

  • - (AEST)
  • Mordialloc Beach
Mordialloc Beach, Mordialloc VIC 3195, Australia

Scientists from the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) are slipping on suits fitted with ultraviolet radiation (UVR) sensors to measure the influence of reflective surfaces such as sand on UVR exposure.

Australia has the highest skin cancer rates globally with more than two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. The more an individual is exposed to UV radiation, the greater their risk of developing skin cancer. But skin cancer is preventable. Protecting your skin from UV exposure reduces your risk.

ARPANSA is using National Science Week to engage the public on the importance of sun protection. While measurements are being conducted at the beach, there will be other scientists on hand to have a yarn about the research and the importance of sun protection.
