Celebrate National Science week and grab a beer with scientists from Brisbane's Ecosciences Precinct.
Come and join us for a Pint of Science to celebrate National Science Week, and listen to just three of the many scientists from government agencies based at the Ecosciences Precinct at Dutton Park: CSIRO, the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI), and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF).
Tamara Taylor, a DAF - Biosecurity Qld scientist: Biological control of invasive plants - no it's not "just like a cane toad"
The process of evaluating and testing suitable biological control agents for the control of invasive weeds in Australia is a time-consuming and expensive enterprise. And so it should be! We need to keep Australia safe from the possibility of releasing organisms that damage our natural environment and economy. To allay any fears about the reliability of the tests and checks put in place, Tamara will be describing the various hoops that must be jumped in this rigorous research process.
Dr Dan Pagendam (CSIRO - Data61): Prediction of groundwater dynamics using Deep Learning and remotely sensed information
Dan will explain how they use statistics and machine learning for biological control of invasive mosquito populations, prediction of groundwater dynamics and quantifying uncertainty surrounding predictions of soil carbon sequestration in agriculture.
Dr Melinda Laidlaw (DESI - Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Sciences): Cloud forests and climate change
Melinda is Science Leader, Species and Herbarium Collections, and an ecologist studying the impacts of climate change and bushfires on the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Join her as she discusses what the future holds for the Gondwana rainforests.
