A whole-school focus on the “Save the snake-necked turtle project” and Citizen Science

Science Week at MLPS will be focussing on the "Save the snake-necked turtle project," engaging students in STEM education and community collaboration.

Activities will span from Pre-Primary to Year Six, exploring habitat, life-cycle, diet, human impact, predators and conservation strategies whilst also incorporating cross-curriculum learning areas including art, literacy and HASS.

Students will work with local Aboriginal community members, artists, and turtle conservation experts, fostering cultural appreciation and environmental stewardship. The project aligns with National Science Week's schools theme of "Beyond Sustainability". The project is promoting hands-on learning, interdisciplinary connections, and community involvement.

Through diverse activities, students will develop critical thinking, research skills, and environmental awareness, contributing to increased STEM literacy and engagement. The practical and scalable nature of the activities ensures accessibility while fostering a sense of purpose and agency in addressing environmental challenges.

With support from external stakeholders and staff from across the school, Science Week at MLPS aims to inspire curiosity, creativity, and collective action for the conservation of biodiversity and Indigenous knowledge.
