Science week 2024 'Species survival more than just sustainability'

We have several events occurring over the week, two of the main events include:

1. Making a bird feeder out of recycled materials

Students will bring in a recyclable container which they can use to build a bird feed/house which they can place in there garden to attract birds. They will be shown some examples for inspiration. They will have access to craft materials such as paint, glue guns, scissors and piece of wood to make perches. There will also be bird seed available for them to take home and put in their feeder.

2. Staff v’s students sustainable eating competition

At this event a selection of students will v's a selection of staff in an eating competition where contestants have to eat different sustainable foods. A long the way students will be educated on why the foods are more sustainable than other foods. The teams will earn points based on how many members of the group are willing to eat the food. Some of the foods we have on offer include:

  • Organic banana
  • Raw mushroom
  • broccoli stalk
  • oyster
  • cricket chips
  • meal worms
  • pickled water melon rind
  • ant Lollie's

When each food is presented there will be a discussion on why the food is considered a sustainable food source. We will also discuss why it is important for our society to waste less food and choose more sustainable food types.
