The school theme for National Science Week in 2024 is Species Survival - More than just sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.
At Edenhope College we’ve decided to meet the scientists who work in the field to save our local endangered species. We will be working with them out in the field and discovering some of the monitoring activities they do to help the survival of our local species.
The Edenhope College students will take part in hands on activities with the following organisations:
The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action – The DEECA crew have organised some activities to show the science behind what happens in forest and fire management. They have arranged to use the CFA burns table to demonstrate the science behind bushfire management.
The South-Eastern Red-tail Black Cockatoo Team – Bronwyn Perryman will teach the students about the Kid’s Helping Cockies Program this collaborative program works with zoos and schools in a hands-on way to help the endangered South-Eastern Red-tail Black Cockatoo survival.
Landcare/Zoo’s Victoria – Local Landcare Facilitator Bindy Lee’s has been working with Zoo’s Victoria on the Wimmera based recovery program for the Golden-ray blue Butterfly. Bindy has arranged for some creeping boobialla plants to be donated to the school to create habitat for the butterfly in the school grounds.
Edenhope College – Miss Craig and Miss Farran will work with students to show them how to use some of the measuring tools scientists use in monitoring the environment for species survivability. Students will also learn about citizen science programs they can participate in to help species survivability in our local area.
