The Science of Healthy Parks and Healthy People

  • - (ACST)
  • Glenthorne Park
Majors Road, O'Halloran Hill SA 5158, Australia

This tour will engage local secondary science, geography and design and technology students to; understand the occupation and profession of landscape architecture as a STEM profession, view the incorporation of STEM in a familiar and fun environment, where such connections may not have previously been made, and to encourage students to consider a STEM career, including Landscape Architecture.

The Glenthorne National Park – Ityamaiitpinna Yarta Nature Play Precinct will deliver an exciting experience for students. The project tour will celebrate the natural context and conservation goals within the precinct, encouraging a strong engagement with the cultural and environmental history of the site. One of the primary strengths of this project, that students will witness,  is the dedication to providing learning experiences in all design elements, provoking curiosity, exploration, and imagination in the principles of STEM applied through the design process.

Participants will see how the design prioritises the user experience whilst ensuring sustainable outcomes (including open space and greening targets) are maximised, contributing to broader planning goals for Greater Adelaide. Renowned for the project’s demonstration of nature play principles for all ages, cultures, and degrees of mobility and neurodivergence to enjoy imaginative, creative, and adventurous activity.

The tour will highlight the science, technology, engineering and maths elements that are richly embedded throughout the park that will appeal to every student, regardless of their favourite subject.

The event is gratefully supported by The Australian Government.
