Science has the power to change the species. Our students will have the opportunity to transform bacterial cells. In this experiment, students will learn about how bacteria can be changed by adding new DNA. They will work with a type of bacteria called E. coli and a small piece of DNA called a plasmid. This activity will help them see how bacteria can gain new traits, like being able to resist antibiotics or glow under certain lights.
After the experiment, students will discuss how these changes in bacteria are similar to creating special plants and animals that can survive better in tough conditions, like being disease-resistant or able to handle drought and extreme temperatures. This will help them understand how genetic modification can help species survive environmental challenges.
