  • Katanning Senior High School
Golflinks Road, Katanning WA 6317, Australia

Species are all around us from the tiny invertebrates living in our water systems to the birds that eat them. We can listen, learn and explore.

This event is for students from Years 5 to 8 in the Katanning region to take part in workshops about species and their habitats in our local community. Travelling group Birds of Prey will present to everyone about the birds of prey in our region - their strengths, weaknesses and threats. They will also have some birds here for viewing. Students will get the opportunity to take part in workshops presented by local presenters from Landcare and Friends of Piesse Lake, as well as with external presenters. External presentations will involve looking at the information that can be learned from bird scat, Birds of Prey and the physics of climate change - presented by the Einstein First Project.

The day will start with a whole group presentation from Birds of Prey. After this students will be divided into small groups and rotate through three activity sessions. Topics of these sessions include: identifying wetland invertebrates, designing a wetland, building a bee hotel, analysing whale snot, looking at urban water use and exploring the physics of climate change. Each student will build and take home a memento of the day.

The event will include students from 11 regional schools and over 400 students.
